I dabble in henna art because I think it is a beautiful form of expression.  When I started doing henna many years ago, it wasn't because I chose to learn, I had to help at the booth when the henna artist was
too busy.  I am a portrait artist and caricatures is what I was actually doing,  I was chosen to help, because of my steady hand, I guess!  Later I will go more in detail about what I know about the art of HENNA.

Hello, my name is Deborah Moreno and I am a portrait artist and caricaturist from Kansas City, Missouri.
I studied fine art at Kansas City Art Institute and, while still a student, I painted portraits and caricatures for friends, family and customers.  In 1997 I moved to Las Vegas, Nevada and embarked upon a career as a freelance caricature artist and portrait painter. In only six years working at major Hotels and Casinos in Las Vegas, I managed to paint my way into the hearts and homes of people around the world.
I have now moved back in the Kansas City area and am doing what I truly love: painting fine art, portraits and caricatures in a romantic and realistic style.  I am versatile and imaginative in all of my creations.
In the caricature field I am considered amazingly accurate, always surprising and amazing sitters and viewers.
My work ranges from the funny & whimsical to the sweet & sensuous.
My work has been featured on children's books and magazine covers.
The portrait section features one of  my "Personalized Paintings", as I  call the portraits I have drawn using my own style, developed over the years. I enjoy painting portraits, contemporary abstracts and figure drawings.

I invite you to explore this web site and enjoy my paintings and drawings. I welcome all comments and questions, and  any personal email will go straight to me for a response. Email contact is facesketch@gmail.com

Caricatures Without Boundaries brings smiles to children in the Metro Kansas City area. Deborah's caricature art relieves the suffering of children, who because of their illness or because of poverty, often feel isolated.

Deborah has organized fundraisers with the help of local sponsors such as La Salsa Nightclub and Mi Raza Magazine to raise funds for workshops in the community.

By supporting Caricatures Without Boundaries you can help bring smiles to children in need. Together we can help them forget for a moment the pain and struggle in their daily lives. CWOB wants to raise our society’s awareness of youth affected by illness and soon, with your help by attending fundraisers or donating, we will be giving these kids an opportunity to learn to draw in workshops accommodated to their special needs!

Caricatures speak the universal language of laughter, help Deborah promote a spirit of solidarity through your support!

Please stay tuned to learn about our next fundraiser!  If you need more information, contact Deborah directly at (816) 804.3080

It takes time...

Years ago, thirteen, to be exact, I started doing caricatures on a daily basis.
Back then the caricatures were not so good, but I was able to sell them,
probably because of my charming personalty, haha.
Lack of experience, and although I practiced every single day
for a minimum of two hours straight, it was many months
before I felt comfortable charging my customer for their drawing.
I remember how, back then, I knew the sketch was a bit off,
and I'd say stuff like: "well, I'll put your name on it so you know its you"
Little by little as the months, then the years went by, I got better.
On any given day I would notice a small improvement that made me feel great
and made me want to get better and better.  Thirteen years later, I'm still in love
with my profession.  It is a great way to make a living and I recommend it to anyone
who likes to draw.

Dream Act

I was very glad to have been a part of a fundraiser event
for the Dream Act (Development, Relief and Education
for Alien Minors) this past Friday at La Salsa Nightclub.
The organizers Celia Ruiz and Irania Ortuno suggested that I
draw the faces of several activists and friends
on that night of Rock En Espanol.
 It was a great time!

What is it like to be a caricature artist :)

To be a caricature artist for me, is to enjoy work as if it was play.   Getting paid is a bonus.
A caricaturist like me spends a lot of her time sketching, thinking about cartoon bodies,
 colors, art supplies, etc.

Some of the usual things a caricaturist is asked on a daily basis are:

How long have you been drawing?  I usually answer: oh, about half an hour!
Where did you go to school to learn caricatures?  Well, of course!
I went to the Caricature Institute of Las Vegas, Nevada!  Not really,
I went for Fine Art at the Kansas city Art Institute.
I learned caricatures at Circus-Circus in Las Vegas.
I really live to paint and paint to live.
Will you share your thoughts and questions in the comments?
I would love to hear from you!

Wow it has been a while!  Because time goes by so fast, right?  Soon the kids will be on Summer Break, which reminds me -does anyone enjoy the Free Friday Night flicks at Crown Center as much as I do?  I look forward to spreading my blanket on the grass early in the evening and waiting on my sisters and their families (they always arrive late)!  This summer they have a great line-up: July 2nd: Pretty In Pink, then Jurassic Park, Hairspray, Julie and Julia, Groundhog Day, and Oceans Eleven, the last one is a Harry Potter movie, can't remember which one, though.  Hope to see you out there!!! I looove movies! Especially free movies:)))

Looking forward to April 2nd at La Salsa

"NOCHE RANCHERA"

This upcoming event is going to be so different from anything I've ever been involved in before.
There is going to be KARAOKE, DANCING, I am going to be doing CARICATURES of all the guests all night.
I had an idea, to pre-draw the cartoon bodies, one for the men, one for the ladies.
And since it is "NOCHE RANCHERA" I thought, mmmmm well its going to be a surprise!
and not the only surprise, mind you!
We are doing a RAFFLE OF A PAINTING of "El Rey" VICENTE FERNANDEZ!!!
(No additional purchase necessary, your $10 donation to the event automatically enters you in the raffle!) This is truly going to be a great evening! No faltes, come down and participate, you may go home with an original oil painting on canvas!  If you dont sing, it's okay, I don't either.  We will have lots of fun any way:)

Following is an article from The Messenger at Children's Mercy Hospital...

VOLUNTEER CARICATURE ARTIST
SHOWING CHILDREN AS THEY REALLY ARE, NOT THE CONDITIONS FROM WHICH THEY SUFFER

Little Deborah Moreno was in a car accident.  The month she spent in
Children's Mercy Hospital could feel like a lifetime for any 12-year-old.

But when her portrait was drawn by two artists that had come over from
Hallmark, Moreno's life in fact, was forever changed.

"At the time I had scars on my face from the wreck," explains Moreno,
"but they drew me as if those never existed."
Those artists provided Moreno with a picture of how she was seen by others,
not how she viewed herself or the injuries.

"Like so many children, I already liked to draw.  But after receiving that portrait,
I knew that's what I wanted to do for others," says Moreno.  "The incredible feeling
it gave me, I wanted it to be shared with everyone."

So during the last 20 years, Moreno continued to draw, practice and hone
 her skills.
Now returning to Children's Mercy as a volunteer, Moreno continues
the tradition of drawing children as they really are, not based on the conditions from
which they suffer.

Moreno never asks the children to pose, but simply uses the opportunity to talk with them.
"Sometimes in the begining they're quiet or bashful," says Moreno.  But inevitably
while being drawn, the children open-up and start sharing stories with me."

Moreno begins by drawing their faces, and while talking to them, is able to sketch
an individual body that fits their personalities.
If they have no hair, Moreno asks if they wear hats, or would they like a flower in their portrait.
If there is a big scar on a child's face, she may draw the other side.  As Moreno stresses,
ther's always a way to bring out the beauty and joy of every child.

"I often focus on their eyes," says Moreno.  "No matter their condition, I can always
see their true personality -their inner-child - through the eyes."
When Moreno started volunteering, she thought it would be fun for the patients.

"The children do get so excited when I give them their very own portrait," says Moreno.
"But I'm the one that's truly rewarded in the experience.
They offer me so much more than what I give them in a drawing."

Upon completing the portrait, many times the patients will ask for colors and sketch pads
to create drawings of their own.
"It's exciting to me when the children share how they too like to draw," says Moreno.
"I offer suggestions and encouragement, for I expect that one day,
one of these children will return to Children's Mercy and continue the tradition
of drawing patients as they really are, not the conditions from which they suffer."

EVENT AT LA SALSA NIGHTCLUB: DANCE FOR A GOOD CAUSE!

Hi all! I'm happy to announce the first ever event to raise money to purchase supplies needed to do caricatures.  As you may already know, I volunteer weekly at Children's Mercy Hospital, among other non-profit organizations.  My dream is to volunteer a lot more this year 2010! LOOK AT THE FLYER AND SAVE THE DATE: Friday, January 29th!  Tickets are $10 dollars and you are elligible to win a painting I did especially for this event: a tribute to the beautiful and talented Salma hayek.

Volunteer Caricatures

Caricatures speak the universal language of laughter, a languaje which is not limited by geographical boundaries or financial status. It is only limited to accessibility and exposure. I always wanted to share my drawing skills to make children smile. Every Wednesday I head out with my easel, paper, and colors to the Children's Mercy Hospital in my hometown, to draw sketches of the young patients, who enjoy getting their caricature drawn, happily getting involved in choosing a cartoon body according to their favorite hobby, sport, or hero.
